TREATMENTS AND SURGERIES
GASTRIC SLEEVE
Bariatric surgery that involves reducing the size of the stomach by removing approximately 80% of it, leaving a tubular-shaped stomach with a capacity of about 150–200 ml. This surgery modifies only the stomach. It is an irreversible procedure. Mechanism: restrictive
ROUX-EN-Y GASTRIC BYPASS
Bariatric surgery in which a 60 ml stomach pouch is created and connected to the intestine to reduce the absorption of fats and carbohydrates. It is 100% reversible. Mixed mechanism (restrictive and malabsorptive).
MINI GASTRIC BYPASS
Less invasive gastric bypass than the classic version, involving only one connection between the stomach and intestine, reducing risks such as bleeding, leaks, and obstructions. It is reversible. Mechanism: mixed (restrictive and malabsorptive)
BAGUA-TYPE GASTRIC BYPASS
Modern gastric bypass that preserves both restrictive and malabsorptive mechanisms and is tailored to each patient's weight loss needs. It involves a single connection between the stomach and intestine and includes an anti-reflux mechanism to prevent liquids from reaching the esophagus. It is reversible. Mechanism: mixed (restrictive and malabsorptive)
REVISION SURGERY
Surgery for patients who have undergone previous bariatric procedures and are experiencing complications or insufficient weight loss. It can involve a reversal to the original anatomy or a conversion to another procedure. It is reversible. Mechanism: variable depending on the case.
METABOLIC SURGERY
Gastrointestinal surgery that alters anatomy to improve blood glucose control in patients with type 2 diabetes. These procedures aid in weight loss and activate gut hormones that help regulate diabetes. It is reversible. Mechanism: mixed (restrictive and malabsorptive)
MEDICAL TREATMENT FOR OBESITY
Pharmacological treatment for overweight or obese patients who are not candidates for surgery. It helps reduce weight, improve eating habits, and promote a healthy lifestyle. It is reversible. Mechanism: pharmacological
